Homework
In this magazine cover , males are being represented as modern. The celebrity (Tom Holland) is the main image and is dressed in a suit, which could be considered as looking wealthy, as generally most people don’t need to own a suit unless they need it regularly. This suggests the idea of males having to provide for their family in the modern society. The cover lines can also infer modern representation because they talk about the online media and the pandemic which was at its peak when the cover was released (April 2021).The colour theme of the cover could also be described as stereotypical for a male in modern society as the are very neutral/dark, which could add to the outfit he is wearing in the main image. This particular cover lacks the challenging of stereotypes and representation of males who may not fit into what society may describe as ‘normal’.

exam question
explore how this front cover of GQ magazine uses media language to communicate meanings ;
-images
-text\written language
-layout and design
This front cover of GQ magazine uses media language to communicate multiple different interpretations. The black wings that he is wearing in the main image connotes that he is an angel, however the fact that they are black is unusual because the colour black is usually linked to evil and hell.So the wings may have been made black to represent his skin colour and the fact that he his protecting people against racial slurs. The cover line 'Guardian Angel' also suggests this because he is acting as the guardian angel for people that have experienced racism. The fact that the camera angle is a low angle shot also suggests that he is looking over everyone and protecting them, however it could also be interpreted as he is superior to the people that say racist comments. The layout of the cover also ensures that readers interpret him as an angel and not a devil due to the colouring of the wings, as they have the cover line in bold almost in the middle that says 'Guardian Angel'.
writing the font in gold and the jewellery also says that he is wealthy and makes good money as a footballer, which could be seen as him showing off to the people that were racist towards him.he also isnt wearing a shirt which suggests that he wants to be seen as strong and powerful because he is standing up and saying something instead of sitting down and taking it.

Homework Gender is represented slightly differently in GQ and Details magazine. In GQ magazine, the cover is constructed to showcase inclusivity and strength in a gender , whilst in Details it showcases the stereotypical male gender as superior to women. In this cover , the main image is mostly a man and only features the hands and legs of the women,in which the fingernails are painted red which connotes anger , love and romance. There are also no cover lines , which suggest that they want the main image to be viewed as the focus of the magazine with little to no context. Therefore in this cover women are seen as an romantic accessory to men , and men are seen as superior.

-vogue was first issued in 1892 before being bought by conde nast
-vogue is aimed at abc1 fashion and style conscious women who are educated sophisticated and wealthy
-traditionally targeted at an older female audience of 30-45 year olds
-now broadened to empower and inspires younger readers too as well as more culturally diverse audience
-mainstream magazine , so it uses the typical codes and conventions to construct the front cover
-has its own unique style

-black and asian models very rare and under represented up until 2017
-April 2018 British vogues cover featured a group of models of all colours ages and sized and included the first model to wear a hijab
The two covers are similar because they both feature diversity, as one is a man in a dress which challenges stereotypes and the other is a black woman.they both challenge the stereotype of a magazine cover especially for vogue as it historically under represented black and asian models and was mainly a magazine for sophisticated wealthy white women.

Malala Yousafzai Vogue
Malala is a 27 year old woman from pakistan who was shot in the side of her head when she was 15 on a school bus for just trying to go to school. She had been blogging since 2009 under a fake name and when her identity was exposed she continued to blog, leading to her getting shot. She went on to win the nobel peace prize at 17, becoming the youngest person to ever win a nobel prize. She and her father set up a charity called the malala fund and is now a female education activist and campaigns for girls education rights .
Vogue may have chose to put her on the cover because she is an inspiration to many women across the world and represents power.
-camera angle is eye level medium close up, suggesting malala is facing the problem head on
-colour palette is mostly red, which connotes power and courage

lo:to practise comparing representations in two covers -both women are represented as confident by use of facial expressions and shot type
-both have the same layout for cover lines and main cover line
-both main cover lines suggest empowerment differences:
-different colour palettes represent women and suggest different topics
-different camera angle to focus on different things
-different facial expressions to suggest what the cover is trying to say
-one non stereotypical cover star whilst other is not- suggests important message
The covers both use similar media language techniques; however are different in the way gender is represented and present different topics.
In both covers, gender is represented as being independent by the use of cover lines .In Elle magazine, the main cover line is 'confident' and is backed up with the subtitles 'a smart women's guide to self belief',this suggests that women are smart and can be successful by themself which challenges the stereotype that they should marry and stay home to look after children.it also challenges the stereo type that only men can be successful. In Vogue magazine, the main cover line is 'malala' and is backed up with the subheadings 'survivor, activist, legend'.This suggested independence because it shows that malala is multiple things at once and the fact that she is female also challenges the stereotype that women cant get an education and become successful .'Malala' is also in bold which directly links her to these subtitles.
In both covers, the camera shot suggests confidence. In Elle magazine, the camera shot is medium long shot of the main image, which shows of the kim's outfit.this shows that in this cover gender is being represented as confident through outfits and also sends a message that women should be able to wear what they want and feel confident in themselves. In Vogue magazine, the camera shot is a close up of Malala's head, which shows of her facial expression and headscarf. This represents gender as being confident through the fact that Malala is wearing a head scarf and looks confident in it , as if she is showing it off, suggesting that again women should be able to wear and do what they want without being judged by society and should be confident in themselves.
In the covers, the colour palettes each have different connotations which suggests that different messages are trying to be sent by each cover. In Elle magazine, the colour palette is bright pink, grey and white.the two more neutral colours contrast the bright pink and stand out more , as the cover line that is bright pink is 'confident'.The colour bright pink has connotations of fashion, femininity and empowerment which suggests that this cover is trying to highlight that women should have self confidence in themselves and what they wear.in Vogue magazine, the colour palette is majority red , grey and white.the cover is majority red which connotes blood, anger and strength . This represents a different side of feminine confidence than Elle magazine because it sends the message of the fact that woman are strong and can get through not only physical but emotional things in society, also then highlighting the downsides to being a woman in present day and how we should work to fight that. in conclusion, the two covers represent confidence and power in women in different ways. The elle cover represents confidence in a fashionable way, whilst the vogue cover focuses on what malala has done and how she is confident in her achievements.
