Homework

How do music videos reflect the time in which they were made? Refer to Waterfalls (TLC, 1995) to support your points.   [10]

One way that music videos reflect the time they were made is through including references to news that was big at the time. For example, in Waterfalls by TLC , one of the first scenes is a teenage boy rebelling against his mum and dealing drugs with a gang- leading to him getting shot and killed.By incorporating this narrative into the music video, the audience understands this as a reference to the drug/gang crime problem that was on the news a lot during the 90s.This could be relatable to some people and provides nostalgia /a reminder of the problem that is still happening today. It also reflects the groups message and shows their concern for problems at the time, making them more relatable.

Another way music videos reflect the time they were made is through the use of special effects as it shows how technology has progressed over time and gives an idea of what was considered realistic at the time. For example in waterfalls when the girls are seen as water outlines of themselves using special effects.these effects would have been very new at the time and so would have made the music video very memorable.it also would make them look and feel superior as artists as very few people used these types of special effects at the time.

How far do the two music videos reinforce gender stereotypes?

The man -by Taylor swift- heavily reinforces gender stereotypes. For example , throughout the music video we see a man doing daily tasks and we almost get an overview of his life.Firstly, the camera framing is almost always slightly below the man and following him at all times, which highlights not only his high status but also his high ego. Also gesture codes demonstrate a typical mans personality and respect towards other people; for example on the train when he manspreads and pushes over other people- or when he has a ‘tantrum’ when he doesn’t get his way playing tennis. Both of these things represent gender bias in day to day life through the poor behaviours of men and how they objectify women. Finally, the music video a;so represents the gender pay gap in the workplace through how the man acts poorly in the office and still seems to be rich whereas the females get shoved to the side -highlighting how their protests are often dismissed.Overall, the music video inequality between men and women and questions how far feminism has really come over the years.
